Firefighters Gain Upper Hand On 200-Acre Blaze In Winchester
WINCHESTER (CBS) — Fire crews are close to extinguishing a 200-acre brush fire in the Winchester area Monday, forcing the evacuation of several homes and an equestrian center.
Crews had reached 50 percent containment by late afternoon Monday, fire department spokesman Capt. Mike Smith said.
The fire was reported at 1 p.m. at Baxter and Menifee roads and was spreading north toward Scott Road, according to county fire officials.
At least six homes on Briggs Road were evacuated, along with horses from the Menifee Meadows equestrian center.
The flames tore through a big rig trailer and a parked boat when the blaze erupted this afternoon. Two homes and two outbuildings suffered minor damage.
Traffic was backed up on Briggs Road, and Scott Road was closed in both directions in the area.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
