Internet, Phone Service Restored For Time Warner Customers

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Internet and telephone service for thousands of Southern California homes and businesses went out for more than six hours Sunday as one of the largest Internet providers grappled with a system-wide failure in its network.

Time Warner spokesman Jim Gordon said company engineers found a malfunctioning piece of equipment at a location outside California and began reprogramming routers by about 1 p.m.

Repairs in some locations began to take effect almost immediately and Gordon said the entire system was expected to be functioning normally by midafternoon.

The intermittent data interruption also cut telephone service for customers who use a Time Warner cable or fiber line for bundled dial tone phone service, according to Gordon. VOIP service like Skype or Vonage was also affected.

Customers in Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange counties; as well as the Coachella Valley, were impacted by the outages, according to Gordon.
