Dodgers Get Second Broadcast Of Good News

LOS ANGELES (CBS) - Hall of Fame radio sportscaster Jaime Jarrin has agreed to return for a 54th season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced today.

Jarrin joked with colleague Fernando Valenzuela today that "you will have me by your side again" next year during the pre-game show on KTNQ (1020).

"I love what I do," Jarrin said. "I'm pleased to serve the Spanish- language community and really share baseball with them -- such a beautiful and pristine sport."

Jarrin was voted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown N.Y. in 1998, and is widely regarded as the all-time best Spanish- language baseball caller.

Just last Friday, English play-by-play man Vin Scully said he would return for a 63rd season with the Dodgers. Los Angeles and Miami are the only two teams with two Hall of Fame broadcasters employed.

Jarrin is known for broadcasting 4,000 straight games -- without missing one -- during 22 seasons, never missing a start.

The streak ended when he took a leave of absence to take over all Spanish-language radio coverage of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Jarrin now shares the KTNQ booth with Pepe Yniguez, and also works with Valenzuela, who was the Dodger pitcher for whom Jarrin served as translator during the "Fernandomania" craze of 1981.
