OC Woman, 83, Explains Why She Got Breast Implants

SANTA ANA (CBS) — An Orange County woman grabbed headlines and criticism after getting breast implants at the age of 83.

"I never dreamt that what I did was going to make such a big splash," Marie Kolstad told Melissa McCarty, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9. "In most cases, people think this is ridiculous. Why bother kind of thing… well I don't feel my age."

The mother of four, grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother to 12 told McCarty she joked about the surgery in her doctor's office months ago.

"And I said, 'I'm too old for something like that.' He said, 'you're never too old,'" Kolstad said.

Her doctor said cosmetic surgery for seniors is now a growing practice and done if the person is given an excellent bill of health.

"You know, it's all in your mind and because I'm not any larger than I really was before, I'm just very firm and more comfortable," she added.

Kolstad said she feels no different now than 10 or even 20 years ago.

Although loved ones were concerned and advised her against the surgery, Kolstad had no complications and was in Maui just three weeks after the operation.

Kolstad said future, additional surgeries are not out of the question but she will continue to live her life undefined, ageless and for herself.

"To each his own. If you're in fear of you're age, let it be your age, not somebody else's," she added.
