Las Vegas Woman Arrested In Victorville For Allegedly Murdering Goddaughter With Metal Pipe

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police say a 23-year-old woman faces a murder charge for beating her 14-month-old goddaughter to death with a metal pipe.

An arrest report obtained Friday by the Las Vegas Review-Journal says Dyon Johnson was dead for some time before Mariann Harris summoned paramedics to her apartment early Aug. 13.

Lt. Lewis Roberts says Harris was arrested late Wednesday at a relative’s home in Victorville, Calif.

She’s at California’s San Bernardino County jail pending extradition to Nevada.

The girl’s relatives tell the Review-Journal that Harris was the child’s godmother.

The child’s mother, Jannett Simms, and grandmother, Evelyn Simms, say they thought the girl fell down concrete stairs.

But police say they found the pipe, and a neighbor reported seeing Harris strike the girl and her own three children.
