Exterminators To Remove Bee Hive After Man, 95, Is Stung 400 Times

REDONDO BEACH (CBS) — A 95-year-old man is recovering Thursday after he was stung by hundreds of bees at his apartment complex in Redondo Beach.

The victim was walking by an exterminator who was attempting to remove a hive Wednesday afternoon when he was stung more than 400 times.

The exterminator got away unscathed, but the victim was rushed to a hospital, where he's reportedly in stable condition.

Responding firefighters were also attacked by the bees – possibly Africanized honey bees – but none of them were actually stung.

After the attack, the bees waited until sunset to return to their hive.

Exterminators will remove the hive Thursday morning, as the bees won't be as agitated in cooler weather.

This is the third time in just five years that the same apartment building has been overcome by bees.

Last time the hive was removed, workers recovered more than 100 pounds of honey. Officials say all of the honey must be removed to ensure the bees don't return.
