Prepare For Long-Term 'CARE' With Dr. Marion Somers

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — Non-profit organization "3 in 4 Need More" and elder care expert Dr. Marion Somers are launching a summer-long bus tour to raise awareness about long-term care planning. She stopped by KCAL9 Wednesday to talk about the tour.

According to Dr. Marion, 3 out of 4 Americans will need long-term health care services like assisted living, nursing homes, and more – but are not prepared to pay for them. These services are not covered by traditional insurance or Medicare, and can cost thousands per month out-of-pocket.

She is traveling to major US cities by bus to offer simple tips about planning ahead to prepare for long-term care. Her advice is to "prepare for CARE" by:

• C: Considering your risks – how likely are you to need long-term care?
• A: Assessing your needs – who will care for you, and how will you pay for it?
• R: Researching costs – determine the costs of long term care in your city (click here)
• E: Educating yourself – understand all of your options – savings strategies, long-term care insurance, government funding, etc.

Dr. Marion will also be promoting a "Get Your Life Back" contest for those caring for aging parents and loved ones. The winner will receive an ultimate caregiver makeover valued at $50,000, furnished by One Reverse Mortgage. To enter the contest, click here.
