Police Arrest 57-Year-Old Woman For Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed Unborn Child

INGLEWOOD (CBS) — Police have announced the arrest of a 57-year-old woman they say caused a hit-and-run accident in Inglewood Saturday that led to the death of the victim's unborn child.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. at Manchester and Market Streets, according to police.

Lt. James Madia of the Inglewood Police Department said "when officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a vehicle had struck a pedestrian and left the area."

Officials said Brittney Cheeseman, 18, of Los Angeles was walking in a crosswalk when she was hit by a gray 1996 Nissan.

Witnesses told police the Nissan was traveling east on Manchester when it ran a red light.

Cheeseman was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries but her unborn child was unresponsive and showing no signs of life.

Using witness reports of a license plate, police said they traced the car and driver and arrested suspect Janine Rachel Mayfield, 57, of Inglewood.

Officials say she was booked at Inglewood Jail for felony hit-and-run.

She is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
