Student Midwife Convicted In Unsupervised Birth

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A student midwife has been convicted of a felony in Los Angeles for delivering a baby without supervision.

The Los Angeles Times reports that 37-year-old Katharine McCall was convicted Wednesday following an investigation by the Medical Board of California.

The investigation was triggered by a complaint that said McCall appeared to lack knowledge and experience when she delivered a baby in 2007 at the mother's home.

Prosecutors say McCall had agreed to have a licensed midwife supervise the birth, but none was available at the time of the birth.

The mother faced complications during delivery, with the baby's shoulder becoming stuck and vaginal tearing that McCall stitched up improperly.

Both mother and baby survived and recovered.

McCall is slated to return for sentencing Sept. 16.
