El Monte Police Arrest Navy Recruiter For Alleged Sexual Assault

POMONA (CBS) — A Navy recruiting officer was arrested Wednesday by El Monte police for the alleged sexual assault of a potential recruit, prosecutors said.

Van Van Tran, 40, was taken into custody this morning and jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to the District Attorney's Office. He is set to be arraigned Friday on one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object.

The woman says she went to the El Monte recruiting office on March 9 to inquire about joining the Navy and took a practice written examination for potential recruits. She says she was then was driven away by Tran under the ruse of going to a library to get study aids for the regular exam.

Prosecutors said the woman was driven to an area near her home and assaulted before she was freed. She reported the alleged assault, and El Monte police and the U.S. Navy were notified.

If convicted, Tran faces up to eight years in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.
