Woman, 24, Walking To Church Struck And Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver

BALDWIN PARK (CBS) — A 24-year-old woman was walking to church Sunday morning when she was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.

The incident occurred on Stewart Avenue just across from the woman's church.

She was walking north on Baldwin Park Boulevard, the driver was going south. Officials believe the driver lost control of his vehicle, veered onto the sidewalk and struck the woman.

She pronounced dead at the scene.

After the accident, the male driver, identified as Espinosa Moreno, fled on foot.

Police say he was located about two blocks away.

He is being treated for minor injuries. Police expect to charge him with vehicular manslaughter.

Officials said speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash.

The driver, say officials, turned 27 Sunday.

Edward Lawrence, reporting for KCAL9, says the woman was walking with her boyfriend at the time of the accident. Lawrence says the car struck the woman and threw her some 30 feet.
