ALTADENA (CBS) — An 18-year-old Bellflower man was killed Saturday in an accident on the Angeles Crest Highway in Altadena.

California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred about 2 p.m. as the man traveled eastbound.

The unidentified motorist was traveling at an average speed when he approached a curve and failed to turn. He continued straight and slammed into the side of a mountain, the CHP reported.

He drove up the side of the mountain before his vehicle overturned and slide on its roof about 70 feet.

The impact and sliding of the vehicle caused head trauma that caused the fatality.

Officials said the man was wearing camouflage gear and they initially thought he might be a veteran but determined he was in the clothing for a camping trip.
