TORRANCE (CBS) — A Lawndale man was sentenced Friday to 27 years to life in prison for the 2010 machete attack on his roommates that left one dead and another seriously injured.

Carlos Arias Donis, 26, was found guilty last month of one count each of second-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated mayhem with a special allegation of causing great bodily injury, said Deputy District Attorney Donald Syn.

Donis attacked two of his roommates living in a home in the 15300 block of Larch Avenue about 12:50 a.m. Aug. 25, 2010.

Fernando Garcia, 23, died at the scene. A second victim, 22, received serious head injuries.

Donis, who worked as a gardener, was arrested by sheriff's deputies after fleeing the scene.
