Machine Gun Found In 'Children's Pool' In La Jolla

SAN DIEGO (CBS) — An unloaded machine gun was found in the water at a popular Southland beach, police said Wednesday.

KNX 1070's Tom Reopelle reports authorities recovered a Mac-10 automatic pistol in about three feet of water at the Children's Pool in La Jolla.

Officials were notified after a diver spotted the gun along with dozens of bullets of various calibers.

"There are certainly weapons that are more efficient than the Mac-10, but it's still a very aggressive weapon, and it's an expensive weapon," said San Diego Police Detective Gary Hassen. "It's not something you would find laying around."

Police said the gun was not loaded and there was rust, indicating it could have been in the water for quite a while.

Although known as the Children's Pool, it is actually a small beach partially protected by a seawall that is popular with both swimmers and scuba divers.

A search is underway to locate the owner of the weapon.
