IRVINE (CBS) — A 42-year-old bicyclist has been struck and killed by a vehicle in Irvine.

Irvine police Lt. Julia Engen said a driver in a sport utility vehicle was traveling northbound on Shady Canyon Drive when it struck the bicyclist.

When paramedics and police arrived just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, two other cyclists were trying to revive the victim by administering CPR, Engen said.

The bicyclist, who was only identified as an Irvine resident, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at a hospital, Engen said.

The 35-year-old woman driving the SUV and her infant passenger were not hurt in the collision, Engen said. The driver’s name was not released.

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Dennis Maisano at (949) 724-7023.

Ride a bicycle on the streets you must realize you ride at your own risk, the odds are stacked against you getiing home to your family safe and in one piece.
    Sad But True.

  3. Second Coming says:

So sad, but you have to be crazy to ride a bike in Irvine or LA. Most drivers view you as a moving target who is the way not another person. Why risk it folks.

Unfortunately, this was a simple case of mechanical failure on the bicycle. Sad for all involved but, especially, for the victim’s family.
