Firefighter Takes Ill While Fighting Blaze In Commercial Building

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A firefighter took ill Sunday evening while battling a fire that broke out in a commercial building in South Los Angeles, a city fire official said.

The fire was reported at 6:30 p.m. in the 100 block of East Florence Avenue, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The firefighter "fell ill during the overhaul operation" and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Humphrey said.

Rescuers arriving at the location reported heavy smoke billowing from the single story building, Humphrey said.

With 166 firefighters on the scene, the blaze was confined to the structure within 43 minutes, he said.

The cause was under investigation.
