Inglewood Man Charged In Alleged Attack On Mother

INGLEWOOD (CBS) — A Southland man accused of setting a SUV on fire with his 68-year-old mother locked inside was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and other counts.

The suspect, identified by authorities as 40-year-old Gordon Eugene Grant, allegedly poured a flammable liquid on the Ford Explorer before setting it ablaze after an altercation with his mother near his home on South 2nd Avenue in Inglewood, police said. His mother managed to escape from the vehicle without being seriously injured.

During his arraignment Tuesday, Grant pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, making a criminal threat and arson.

Inglewood police told Suzanne Marques, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, Grant was involved in several recent incidents that have caused neighbors worry calling his behavior erratic. They claim he took a blowtorch to a pile of trash because it hadn't been picked up on time setting off a fire. They also said he also shot at a neighbor across the street causing SWAT to be called.

If convicted, Grant faces a maximum prison term of life in prison with the possibility of parole, according to the District Attorney's Office.

He remains jailed in lieu of $1.125 million and is expected to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 15.
