Autopsy Pending On Buena Park Officer, 31

BUENA PARK (CBS) — An autopsy was pending Sunday on 31-year-old Buena Park police officer who died after falling ill during a SWAT physical training exercise.

The officer, Daniel Ackerman, showed signs of exertion about Friday morning and was taken St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, where he was pronounced dead about 3:40 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

Governor Jerry Brown issued a statement Monday regarding the officer's death:

"Officer Ackerman's untimely death is a painful loss for his family, friends, and colleagues. Anne and I extend our condolences as we mourn the passing of a dedicated public servant."

He became a police explorer in 1995 and reserve officer in 2001. He was hired as a full-time police officer in 2005.

Ackerman is survived by his mother, sister and daughter.

On June 14, a 23-year-old South Pasadena police officer died during a training exercise at a shooting range in the Angeles National Forest.

Kevin Sandoval of Covina was among the South Pasadena and Pasadena officers participating in an exercise when he collapsed. Sandoval died about an hour later, but the cause of death, if known, was not made public.
