1 Officer Hurt, Suspect Dead In Boyle Heights Confrontation
BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBS) — One officer was stabbed and the suspect shot dead in a confrontation Saturday afternoon in Boyle Heights.
Reports of an "officer down" came in at 4:55 p.m., according to a desk officer at the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division.
Initial reports said officers were chasing someone who stole an ambulance.
Later, police explained that an inmate -- being released from the downtown Twin Towers jail -- was being transported by private ambulance.
LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman said the suspect lept from the moving ambulance, ran into a church on Bridge Street than barricaded himself inside.
The suspect reportedly stabbed the officer in the bicep with an 8-inch knife. He is in stable condition.
KCAL9 and CBS2's Suzanne Marques reports the suspect is dead.
