LAPD Will Strictly Enforce Curfew Laws During X-Games

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Los Angeles police warned Friday that they will start to strictly enforce curfew laws around Staples Center and LA Live for the duration of the X-Games, which continue through Sunday.

"Curfew laws restrict the rights of juveniles to be outdoors or in public places during certain hours of the day," said Los Angeles police Lt. Paul Vernon of the Central Station.

The city's municipal code states it is unlawful for minors under the age of 18 to be "present in or upon any public street, highway, road curb area, alley, park, playground or other public ground, public place, or public building, place of amusement or eating place, vacant lot, or unsupervised place between the hours of 10 p.m. and sunrise of the immediately following day," with some exceptions.

"Such laws aim to establish a safer community and to better protect kids from becoming victims of rime or becoming involved in delinquent activity," he said.

Curfew violations are punishable by a fine of $250, and the costs could total $675 with some penalty assessments.

Also, the violations could affect a teen's ability to obtain a driver's license.
