Mary Poppins Blows into Costa Mesa

The Broadway musical sensation Mary Poppins recently debuted in Southern California for a 4-week run at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The musical, which draws inspiration from both the classic 1964 film and P.L. Travers children's books, originally opened in London 7 years ago and is currently the 30th longest running show in Broadway history.

In many ways, the Banks family represents any typical troubled family from this time period. Mr. Banks is a stern and somewhat distant man whose primary focus is providing financially for his family. Mrs. Banks is busy, distracted, and focused on everything but her children. Naturally, their two children, Jane and Michael, are out of control. After the latest nanny leaves, the family is in a state of chaos. As the family decides what to do about finding "the perfect nanny," Mary Poppins appears, confident that she fits the bill.

Mary Poppins, with all of her magic, proceeds to take Jane and Michael on a series of adventures throughout the city with important life lessons. Statues and toys come to life as she teaches them about looking past appearances and exerting control over one's words and actions. The audience will find that the combined inspiration of both the original film and books adds depth to the stage show's story and characters.

From the beginning, the audience is aware of the fact that Mary Poppins is only here for a time and a specific purpose. As quickly as the winds change and her "work" is done, she's gone. And while her prim and proper, matter-of-fact manner is expected, she creates an strong emotional connection with the audience.

Featuring classic music and lyrics by the Sherman Brothers, a talented cast, and artistic and authentic set designs, Mary Poppins is appropriate for both children and adults. See it at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts through August 7th.
