Mayor Thanks Public For Heeding Carmageddon Warnings

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — There was no apocalyptic traffic meltdown.

Carmageddon became a big Carma-dud.

Mayor Villaraigosa thanked the public Saturday for largely heeding warnings to stay home, use mass transit or walk or bike places.

He also said the 405 demolition is "moving smoothly," and in fact said things were even moving ahead of schedule.

Rachel Kim reporting from the Emergency Management Center said the mayor and city officials were more than pleased the way the first full day of Carmageddon was playing out.

Earlier today the mayor did a flyover in a helicopter and said he was extremely proud of what he saw...fewer cars.

The mayor also reported mass transit ridership in some places more than doubled a normal Saturday.
