Family Sells Historic Japanese-American Farm On Portuguese Bend Ranch

RANCHO PALOS VERDES (AP) — A century of Japanese-American farming on the Palos Verdes Peninsula is coming to an end.

The Ishibashi family is selling its historic five-acre Portuguese Bend ranch featuring an ocean-view ranch house built in 1952. The Ishibashis grew avocados, poppies, strawberries, carrots, beets and sweet peas on the property near the Trump National Golf Club.

The Torrance Daily Breeze says the Ishibashi produce stand was a Portuguese Bend landmark until it closed a few years ago.

Brothers Tomesco and Kumekichi Ishibashi emigrated from Japan in 1910 and they leased plots on the peninsula for $10 an acre.

Most of the Japanese-American farming families didn't return to the peninsula after they were sent to internment camps during World War II. The Ishibashis were among the few that continued farming after the war.
