DHS: 25,000+ Airport Security Breaches Post-9/11

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The federal government on Wednesday released documents showing thousands of security breaches at airports around the nation — including concerns over Los Angeles International Airport.

The newly-released files from the Dept. of Homeland Security show that there have been over 25,000 security breaches at airports in the past 10 years — an average of seven per day.

Those breaches can range from unauthorized people going through doors or down corridors to passengers boarding planes without permission or proper documentation.

"Remember, these 25,000 are just the ones we know about," said Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah).

And as KNX 1070's Jon Baird reports, the congressman has concerns about security LAX as well.

"They know that there's eight miles of fence there that they've got that has no set standard," said Chaffetz.

After recent incidents  involving what critics call invasive security procedures by the Transportation Security Administration — including one passenger who said her TSA officers forced her elderly mom to remove her soiled adult diaper — one expert is calling for a change.

Former chairman of the NTSB Mark Rosenker told KNX 1070 it's time to bring "sanity" back to airport security.

"I can't support what these folks are doing," said Rosenker. "What they need to focus on is risk-based, intelligence-driven security solutions."
