LAPD Rampart Officer Arrested On Prescription Fraud Charges

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A 22-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department was arrested by his colleagues on Monday on charges of prescription drug fraud.

Officer Joseph Caseres, 46, of the Rampart division surrendered to state narcotics agents and investigators with the LAPD's Workers' Compensation Fraud Unit.

KNX 1070's Claudia Peschiutta reports Caseres was arrested without incident after a grand jury indicted him on nine counts on Friday.

"Our investigation showed that he engaged in what we call 'doctor shopping' and fraudulently obtaining prescription medications," said LAPD Commander Andrew Smith.

Police added there was no indication Caseres was conducting business while on-duty.

Caseres was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. website said Caseres was released on $20,000 bail.
