Local Vote On ‘South California’ Scheduled For Tuesday

RIVERSIDE (AP) — Thirteen mostly conservative California counties would break away to create a 51st state known as South California under a proposal by a local elected official.

Republican Jeff Stone has asked fellow members of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to support a motion to bring together officials from the 13 counties to discuss the idea. A vote is scheduled for Tuesday.

Stone says California is too big to govern, which has led the state to raid local government coffers because of runaway spending.

He knows it will be a challenge to create another state but doesn’t believe it’s an impossible task.

“We are sending a message,” Stone told the Los Angeles Times.

The effort marks the latest in scores of secession movements in California dating back to the 1850s that aimed to cleave the state and split counties and cities.

Even if leaders from the 13 counties got serious about secession, the U.S. Constitution says no new state can be formed without the consent of Congress and the state legislature.

An e-mail message left by The Associated Press for Stone’s chief of staff, Verne Lauritzen, was not immediately returned.

Gil Duran, a spokesman for California Gov. Jerry Brown, said Stone’s proposal is “a supremely ridiculous waste of everybody’s time.”

“If you want to live in a Republican state with very conservative right-wing laws, then there’s a place called Arizona,” Duran told the newspaper.

Stone’s version of South California would not include Los Angeles County. Instead, it would encompass coastal Orange and San Diego counties, and more sparsely populated, inland areas such as Fresno, Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Riverside, San Bernardino and Tulare counties.

Combined, those counties have about 13 million people.

Stone also proposed that South California would have a part-time Legislature with no term limits as well as a newly built capitol building.

This is a great idea! I would move to south California in a heartbeat!

  2. realist says:

It should be called North Mexico😦

If the politicians would not pander the Hispanic vote and pushed for actual homeland security and stopped the illegal immigrant sunami the entire state and country for that matter would not be financially and socially bankrupt.

    1. Karen says:

      Actually realist,

      Los Angeles is North Mexico.

I want to move to South California too.

      I’m not a conservative.

I don’t want to pander to illegal aliens which is what the so-called LIBERAL politicians do.

  3. cate says:

I would like to see his financial figures. Losing LA and Silicon Valley we lose all that money and taxes. I doubt very much that N. Mexico has enough money to sustain itself.

  4. Bob says:

I’ll only vote for it if they export all the illegals!!! No more moochers!

  5. Travis Mogren says:

It looks allot like East California then South California, but hey do what you want..

  6. dragon says:

Hey if they take all that Desert I say we ship all the mexicans out of californa and give them to south california then were going to be better off and LA may clean up and we may find more jobs.

  7. The Big Logic says:

Cali is dead no matter how it’s apportioned. Mexico owns it, but the dumbo legislature is too stupid to understand that. If the Mex would get the hell out, in 10 years it would return to the paradise it once was. Too late!

  8. American 1776 says:

Has anyone even thought this out? Just what do you do with LA County, is this going to be a Island in the middle of the South Cal.? Part of North Cal, but stuck in the South.

  9. Danonymous says:

Sounds like a permanent solution to a temporary problem. But hey, if they want to permanently cut life support from California’s biggest economic engines, San Francisco and Los Angeles… be my guest. 10 years from now they can support their economy exporting meth.

  10. jerky says:

uhhh…this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

  11. jk says:

Here in the OC we say no to the redneck agenda. You right wing ding dongs can move to Az and finnish your sun stroke.

  12. TIM says:

As long as they kick out illegals i am all for it. And stop paying union workers so much money. It is just stupid. Maintenance workers making 60 thousand a year to sit around and check out girls.

    1. LAofAnaheim says:

Maybe they’ll stop giving tax cuts to the wealthy. Yeah!

  13. Debbie says:

Stone is just trying to get his name out there for his next political office. This will never pass a general election vote in the State much less Federal OK.

  14. jim says:

let the confederate thinking parts of california branch off into “south california”. Please GO!!! my only concern is that they’re going to try and enslave migrants over time if they’re not closely monitored by us.

  15. Doug says:

You liberals better be willing to say goodbye to your state pensions and welfare, because the time is soon coming.. Your legislators wasted all the tax money. I hope the South Californians get out in time to miss the financial ruin around the corner.

    1. LAofAnaheim says:

Talking points with no substance. Easy to say………hard to prove

  16. LAofAnaheim says:

Let’s see…..if ‘South California’ secedes (which it won’t)…but you leave the tax revenue generating enertainment industry, access to banks (SF), tourism and the #2 largest ports in the world (Long Beach/Los Angeles). How would “South California” even make money? Man…the Tea Party is getting beyond insane….

  17. Leslie Andrew says:

I’ve read every comment so far; and not one has touched on the issue of gambling. ‘California’ as it stands, hasn’t legalized gambling; but ‘South California’, legalizing gambling, bordering Nevada, where gambling is already legal, looks like generating revenue would be no problem.

    1. logical thinker says:

Yeah, the OC and SD will be known as the “redneck rivera.” I can see the legalization of brothers and sisters and cousins marrying one another in this new redneck state. Meth will be legalized over marijuana, since there are a lot of speed freaks in the IE. Plus, they will get the joys of getting taxed to death to pay for the infrastructure and all the welfare recipients who live in this psuedo-state. And where will all the water come from, since most of the fresh water comes from the northern part of the state. Well at least this gives Jay Leno some good jokes to tell.

jeff stone is stoned….hes been hangin with puff the magic dragon again

  19. White slave says:

This entire country needs to stop pandering to the lazy blacks. We can’t afford to keep paying them to have kids. Welfare and Section 8 aren’t supposed to be legacy programs.
