Alhambra Police Department Mourns Fallen Officer

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Alhambra police officers wore black bands of mourning across their badges Monday in memory of a colleague killed when his squad car collided with another police unit Sunday.

Ryan Stringer, 26, was killed and another officer was injured when their patrol vehicles collided early Sunday morning.

The accident on Garfield Avenue and Main Street occurred about 2:30 a.m. when the cruisers were responding to a robbery, Alhambra police Lt. Dan Rodriguez said. A witness said the other officer ran a red light and was driving around 50 miles per hour right before the crash.

Authorities did not immediately provide details on the robbery report.

Governor Jerry Brown Jr. issued the following statement regarding Stringer's death:

"Anne and I extend our deep condolences to Officer Stringer's family, friends and colleagues. In the prime of his life, he made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of protecting his community."

Stringer joined the Alhambra Police Department in January 2009.

He is survived by his parents, Sonny and Debbie and Stringer, and sisters, Kristen Stringer-Bartel, Kym Stringer, Dana Stringer and Donna McCulloch.

Well-wishers have been delivering flowers to Alhambra police station, Sgt. Kean Oda said.

A memorial service for Stringer will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Calvary Chapel Golden Springs in Diamond Bar, Alhambra police Lt. Edith Lopez said. The funeral procession is scheduled to arrived at the chapel by noon. The service is open to the public.
