Villaraigosa Appoints Gaye Williams As Next Chief Of Staff

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has appointed political veteran Gaye Williams, a former deputy mayor, to be his next chief of staff.

City News Service reported Friday that Williams will take over July 25. She'll replace Rev. Jeff Carr, who announced his resignation earlier this week.

Williams was deputy mayor in the Richard Riordan administration. More recently she served as chief of staff to Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner before he stepped down in April to launch campaign for mayor.

In a statement, Williams said she will work to address key issues like job creation, education and the environment during Villaraigosa's two remaining years in office.

Williams has been an unpaid adviser to Beutner's campaign but she's not expected to continue in that capacity.
