Police: Employee Stole From OC Korean Newspaper

GARDEN GROVE (AP) — A sales manager for the Korean Times has pleaded not guilty to embezzling more than $140,000 from the Orange County-based newspaper.

Bong Soo Kim, a 20-year employee of the newspaper, was charged Friday with felony grand theft. He was arrested Wednesday.

Police said the 52-year-old Kim persuaded businesses to buy advertisements in the newspaper and then asked clients to make checks out to him. The newspaper discovered the scheme in 2010 and alerted police.

Investigators found bank records and tax statements related to the theft at Kim's home.

Police said Kim confessed, claiming his wife's business was failing and he was trying to help her.

City News Service says a pretrial hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
