LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has named a new temporary fire chief following the retirement of Chief Millage Peaks.

Current Assistant Chief Brian Cummings will serve as interim chief of the department until the position is filled.

Cummings is a former firefighter, engineer, Captain, Battalion Chief and Chief of Staff.

Chief Millage Peaks announced last month that he was resigning, effective this Sunday. Peaks, the department’s second black chief, took the helm in September 2009.
