Residents On Edge After Coyotes Kill 3 Dogs In Altadena

View Comments

ALTADENA (CBS) — Altadena residents are on edge after three dogs were killed by coyotes in the past week.

The attacks occurred on or near Mendocino Street by the Altadena Golf Course.

Sunny Murchison, whose 9-year-old Miniature Pinscher was mauled by a coyote Thursday night, says she’s moving out of the neighborhood.

KNX 1070′s Ed Mertz reports.

“They’re cunning; they’re formidable hunters, and they killed my dog,” Murchison told CBS2.

In the past week alone, 13 sightings have been reported to the Sheriff’s Department.

Other residents worry that children may be in danger, but so far, there are no reports of humans being attacked.

In the latest breaking news flash… the sky is blue.

We need to stop developing so much on the coyotes’ land. The more we take away the land, the more they go into human dense areas. They have no choice. In the mean time, keep pets indoors! Especially in the evening, night, and early morning!

    • Belle McBeth

Coytes are here in the basin area due to all of the fires in the mountains and foothills. Their domains are gone and are searching for food, any way that they can find and get it. And yes, people should keep their pets safe inside.

  • Shiggity

The lady said she’s moving out of the neighborhood. Not sure where she plans on moving to. Coyotes are a problem all over southern California, and it’s getting worse. I live in Irvine and had a few run-ins with coyotes.

    • MM stuck in LA

Subsonic .22 rounds and a 9X scope take care of the coyote problems quite nicely.

Hey, Art. You’re an idiot for trying to make people think you are black. Love the way you spelled certain words. You need to be dropped in the Pacific Ocean.

      • IgnorancePermeates

My name should be Ignorance Permeates…typo

Well ignoramus. How would u spell it ?

    • Shiggity

You must not having any friends.

  • AJ

Does that mean an ACME supply opened in the area?
Of course they’re being seen more frequently, the more we push into their lands the more they have to range out into ours to find food.

    • Roger Thornhill

AJ, there is a new ACME store in Altadena. I bought a couple of anvils there last week and some dynamite.

  • Wynne

People who live in the wildland-urban interface — i.e., rural areas — need to keep their pets indoors unless they’re being walked on a leash. Keeping Fido in the fenced back yard for hours at a time is just dangling bait. And the more wildfires we have, the more wildlife is going to be driven into our cities looking for food and water.

  • Alan Hart

Keep your pets inside. If you want to live in the hills, you have chosen to live in Coyote territory. It’s your responsibility to protect your pets and children.

  • Randyk01

GET SMART PEOPLE , QUIT LEAVING FOOD OUT FOR THEM . QUIT LEAVING YOUR PETS OUT BY THEMSELVES . THEY ARE DESPERATE FOR FOOD AND USUALLY GO FOR THE EASIEST TO GET . YOU ARE HUMAN , YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO BE SMARTER THAN THE COYOTES. USE YOUR BRAINS AND QUIT BEING LAZY. THEY WERE HERE LONG BEFORE YOU WERE. YOU INVADED THEIR TERRITORY , AND THEY ARE JUST HUNGRY . FOOD IS SCARCE BECAUSE OF ALL THE MAN MADE FIRES BURNED OUT THEIR FOOD SOURCES.

  • Sean

I’ve been to Altadena. There are bigger problems there than lil old coyotes, if you know what I mean.

  • MM stuck in LA

    Get some roadrunners as pets.

    • AJ

      Spot on!

      • geebo

Spot off, a coyote will kill a pit bull, a rottweiler, and a great dane, of twice their own weight, without hesitation.

  • Sean

    LOL!!@ MM

  • feeblo

coyotes can kill a dog like mcgyver can build stuff

  • Jeff Barker

Get a real dog. Not a “self-propelled toilet brush.

  • Belle McBeth

I’m so sorry that owners lose their pets to coyotes. I live along the San Gabriel Riverbed across from El Dorado park, where there are coyotes at night. All of the ferrel cats are gone as well as owners leaving their dogs outside unattended (especially keeping them outside overnight). I found a website where one can order wolf urine. The best thing I ever purchased. I fill tiny vials that are hung around the parameter of my property. It has been about 5 months now and we no longer hear coyotes around our home.

    • UTMidge

Belle– Will you please list the website where you order the wolf urine? I live south of the FLATS of Altadena and the coyotes have been rampant in our neighborhood lately. I have 3 small dogs and will do ANYTHING to keep them safe! Thanks! :)

  • SUNNY MURCHISON

I WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE ISSUE: COYOTES ARE OUT OF CONTROL. GOD BLESS YOU.

    SUNNY MURCHISON
    ALTADENA, CALIFORNIA

IN MEMORY OF MY DOG LIL SUNNY LEE WHO FACE A BRUTAL DEATH JUNE 30, 2011 BY AN OUT OF CONTROL COYOTE ON E. MENDOCINO STREET, ALTADENA.

  • Sunny Murchison

COYOTES OF OF CONTROL IS A STATE ISSUE AS WELL AS A FEDERAL ISSUE.
COYOTES ARE URBAN COYOTES, NO LONGER AFRAID OF HUMAN BEINGS. THEY ARE BEASTS. THEY ROAM IN PACKS IN NEIGHBORHOODS THAT WERE NOT THEIRS TO BEGIN WITH.

COYOTES KILL DOGS, CATS, HORSES AND HUMANS. TAKE A LOOK AT THE PHOTOS ONLINE WHERE COYOTES ATTACKED CHILDREN. NO JUSTIFICATION FOR THAT. THEY WILL GRAB AN INFANT OUT OF A MOTHER’S ARMS.

LIL SUNNY LEE DIED A HEROE’S DEATH . SHE DID NOT BACK DOWN IN GUARDING THE PROPERTY AT 1092 E. MENDOCINO ST., ALTADENA, CA. SHE GAVE HER LIFE SO THAT OTHERS WILL LIVE!!!!!

  • Puller Lanigan

Geebo, you are full of it. Coyotes are routinely dispatched by dogs across the nation. If they aren’t being killed by lurchers in KS and OK, they are being killed by coonhounds and pitbulls in FL, AL, OH in county run ‘coyote and fox penning’ exhibitions. It is brutal and cruel. I am sorry that Ms. Murchison’s Min Pin was killed, but sadly, that is nature. It could have been a rattlesnake or a hawk. You can’t assume because you live in suburbia that your pets are automatically safe.
