Officers Go On High Alert For Drunk Drivers During Holiday Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — This year's Fourth of July weekend promises to be full of sunshine, celebration and plenty of law enforcement prowling the freeways, looking for motorists driving drunk.

The California Highway Patrol's Maximum Enforcement period, when all available officers will be assigned to patrol duties, begins at 6 p.m. and will continue until 11:59 p.m. Monday, CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said.

"We want you to travel safely through this great state, and enjoy your weekend with friends and family," Farrow said.

Farrow said officers will also be on the lookout for motorists who fail to buckle their seatbelts.

Several checkpoints will be conducted throughout the San Fernando Valley and other Los Angeles Police Department patrol areas.

Checkpoints and increased patrols are also planned throughout the county, as part of the "Avoid the 100" DUI Task Force campaign, funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
