LA County Supervisors Approve $3.5M Summer Jobs Program For Teens

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a $3.5 million program to create at least 2,200 summer jobs for young people.

The program, recommended by supervisors Don Knabe and Zev Yaroslavsky, addresses the 26.9 percent unemployment rate for young people in Los Angeles County.

"In these tough economic times, young people are really struggling to find employment, which limits their ability to gain necessary experience for the future," Knabe said. "This program will give them that experience and life skills, while providing local organizations with invaluable resources and support."

Clerical, maintenance, groundskeeping, child care, teacher's aide and library assistant positions will be offered at county and city facilities, non profit and for-profit organizations. Young people in foster care, on probation or those whose families receive assistance will be prioritized in the program.
