LONG BEACH (KFWB 980) — If you’ve been to the Downtown shoreline, you’ve seen the oil islands that are disguised as high-rise apartments.

There are four of them and they are THUMS: Texaco, Humble, Union, Mobil, Shell — the same consortium of oil companies that built these islands in the 1960s to tap into an enormous oil field under water here.
