LA County Earmarks 'Extraordinary' $3.2M For Creaky Elevators

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Officials are set to spend millions of dollars to fix the creaky elevators in Los Angeles County's aging administration building.

Built back over five decades ago, the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration would be torn down and replaced under different economic circumstances.

But as KNX 1070's John Brooks reports, county officials are growing weary of people getting stuck in the failing elevators in the eight-story structure located in downtown Los Angeles.

"Sometimes the elevators will just skip floors, go straight to the basement," said one employee who works in the building. "Two weeks ago, a guy got stuck in there for like 45 minutes."

Internal Services Director Tom Tindall said $3.2 million has been earmarked in "extraordinary maintenance funding" to modernize the elevators.

An aide to one county supervisor said the county cannot afford such a high price tag for elevator repair, but Tindall said the funds have already been approved.

In all, eleven elevators will be upgraded over the next 20 months.
