College Football Star From Gardena Shot In Reno

<
GARDENA (CBS) — A 22-year-old student athlete from Gardena was seriously wounded in a shooting in Reno, Nev., it was reported Sunday.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Brandon Wimberly was hospitalized in serious condition with major injuries to his intestines. His injuries, however, were not life-threatening.

Wimberly, a wide receiver on the University of Nevada-Reno's football team and graduate of Gardena High School, was shot about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in Reno's Freight House District following a fight.

"It's an extensive injury," Nevada football coach Chris Ault told the newspaper. "Another centimeter and the doctor said he might have not made it to the hospital."

Wimberly will be a junior in the fall. While at Gardena High, he was a first-team All-Marine selection as a junior and senior.

Reno police Lt. Keith Brown said no suspects have yet been identified. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and identification of the shooter.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Reno police tip line at (775) 334-2115.
