Police In Irvine Arrest Man For Allegedly Murdering Estranged Wife In Broad Daylight

IRVINE (CBS) — A woman was fatally shot in Irvine Thursday afternoon --  in broad daylight near the daycare center she worked --  and police say they have arrested her estranged husband as the killer.

The woman, now identified as 29-year-old Alejandra Hernandez of Orange, was shot on Via Siena near Amalfi Drive, not far from University High School, Irvine police Lt. Julia Engen said.

Police responded to a call of shots fired at 2:10 p.m., she said. They initially  warned residents to lock their doors as officers scoured the area for suspects.

Orange County Fire Authority paramedics tried to revive the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to OCFA Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion.

Hernandez' estranged husband, 35-year-old John Rand Agosta, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder.

Police did not give a motive for the murder other than to describe the couple as estranged.
