HIGHLAND (AP) — Riverside County authorities say a man who held a three-year-old girl hostage in a Highland home has been captured after a five-hour standoff with deputies.

Sheriff’s officials say Gonzalo Hernandez, 38,  locked himself in a bedroom at about 1 a.m. Wednesday with the girl and told authorities that he had a gun.

Negotiators and a SWAT team were called.

Authorities say the man released the girl after a few hours and was finally taken into custody shortly after 6 a.m. when tear gas was fired into the home and he jumped out a window.
