Driver Charged With Murder In Valley Motorcycle Crash

VAN NUYS (CBS) — A San Fernando Valley driver who turned right in front of a motorcyclist will be charged with murder as investigators worked on Tuesday to determine exactly what caused the fatal crash.

Roberto Casillas, 56, was driving his Nissan Pickup eastbound on Vanowen at Etiwanda in Reseda when he turned in front of Steven Campos, who was headed west on his Yamaha motorcycle.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports investigators believe Campos had the right of way when he was struck by the truck driven by Roberto Casillas.

Campos died a short time after the crash at a local hospital.

Valley Traffic Division Detective Bill Bustos said investigators are still learning more about Casillas.

"We believe that he was impaired, he was arrested, and we're looking into his background right now," said Bustos.

In addition to being charged with murder, Casillas faces bail of over $1 million — an unusually high bail amount that may signal more in his background than was first apparent.

Police are asking any witnesses to the incident to come forward with details.
