Airlines Collected $3.4B In Baggage Fees In 2010

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Airlines collected $3.4 billion in baggage fees in 2010, a 24-percent increase year-to-year, the government reported Monday.

Reservation and change fees accounted for an additional $2.3 billion, but those fees were down three percent from two years ago.

The fees are typically $50 round-trip for a first checked bag, according to the Associated Press.

Analysts said that without the fees the airline industry would be losing money.
