1 Arrested, 2 At Large In Pepper Spray Attack On Off-Duty CHP Officer

SAN DIEGO (CBS) — Police on Friday are on the lookout for two suspects in a Southland crime spree that was cut short when they targeted an off-duty officer with pepper spray.

An employee at a local AT&T store and three pedestrians were assaulted by three men, who police said made demands for money from the victims.

KNX 1070's Tom Reopelle reports that when they got to their fourth target, the suspects were met with a surprising reaction.

The three men approached an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer, asked for the time of day, and then used pepper spray.

The officer brandished his weapon and detained Angel Blanco, 21, as the other two men fled on foot.

"He was attacked and a weapon was used on him, but he had the presence of mind to follow through with his police training and it's a good thing," said Lieutenant Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department.

Police are still searching for the two remaining suspects.
