'Flying Bear' Wanders Onto Highway, Kills 2 In Bizarre Crash

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A bizarre highway collision that turned a Canadian black bear into a 300-pound bullet ended in tragedy on Wednesday.

A car heading eastbound on a rural highway about 25 miles northwest of the Canadian capital Ottawa ran into a male bear, hurling it into an oncoming westbound vehicle.

KNX 1070's Chris Sedens reports the bear reportedly shattered the front windshield, flew through the vehicle and then out the rear windshield.

"If you could just imagine the impact it would take to do that, it's just incredible," said CTV News reporter Catherine Latham, who was sent to cover the crash.

The 25-year-old driver of the second vehicle and a 40-year-old passenger behind her were both killed instantly.

Investigators say the bear may have been wandered out onto the highway while hunting for a companion in the midst of mating season.
