Military Wives Becoming Doulas To Help Others Give Birth

LOS ANGELES (CBS) —They are part of a very unique sorority.

Local women are becoming birthing coaches and helping military wives.

They're now helping women on local military bases as they prepare for childbirth.

They are called doulas and as many women choose to get birth in a more familiar, intimate and private setting (not to mention to keep costs down) these birthing coaches are becoming more and more common.

Sandra Mitchell, reporting for the CBS2 News at 11 p.m. Tuesday, introduced us to a local group of military wives who are training to become doulas. They are filling a much-needed void.

She tells us that military doulas first began organizing after 9-11, assisting women who had lost spouses at the Pentagon or World Trade Center.
