County Officials: Probation Officer Stole Over $14,000

LOS ANGELES (AP) — County officials say a deputy probation officer spent over $14,000 belonging to 18 young people who trusted him with their savings for a fresh start.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors said Tuesday the money was taken by a probation officer who died in March. The victims, in county custody, earned the money at outside jobs.

Department of Children and Family Services boss Jackie Contreras says all victims have been repaid.

City News Service says Samuel Sago entrusted the officer with $4,665. When the 22-year-old left the system, he had a job but could find no home, so ended up on the street.

Officials say the victims were foster youth who’d had run-ins with the law. They were part of the county program until they were 21 or emancipated.
