OC Garage Doors Knocked Out By Local Military Radio Frequency

SANTA ANA (CBS) — Residents in Orange County who are wondering why their garage door opener isn't working may need to look no further than the U.S. military.

KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports a military radio interference is wreaking havoc for homeowners in Westminster, Huntington Beach and Seal Beach.

U.S. Naval Weapons Station spokesman Greg Smith said previously unused frequencies employed by a new radio system at the Seal Beach base is behind the disturbance.

The solution, said Smith, is to retrofit door openers to another frequency.

"People want to stay away from the 380-399.9 megahertz range," said Smith. "That's the range that the new DoD (Dept. of Defense) radio system operates under."
