Mendocino County authorities say an abalone diver who went missing off the coast of Fort Bragg is presumed dead.

Capt. Kurt Smallcomb of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s office said Tuesday that crews are continuing their search for the body of 37-year-old William Kim of Los Angeles.

Sheriff’s officials say Kim and another diver were diving for abalone in an area of Mitchell Creek when they got caught in breaking surf Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the other diver was rescued by boat about three miles south of Fort Bragg, but Kim was not found. A portion of Kim’s dive tube washed up on Pine Beach a short time later.

A third diver made it safely to shore.
