Desert Hot Springs Man, 22, Gets Probation For 2nd Sex Crime Involving Underage Girl

INDIO (CBS) — A 22-year-old Desert Hot Springs man was put on three years probation Friday for having sex with a minor.

Jonathan Sledge was also sentenced to 147 days in jail by Superior Court Judge John M. Davis, but was immediately released due to credit for time served since his February arrest.

Sledge’s punishment was handed down upon his guilty plea to a felony count of sexual interaction with a person under 16. He also admitted to violating terms of his probation stemming from a previous sex crime. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a misdemeanor charge of molesting a minor.

Under the probationary terms set down today, Sledge must stay 100 yards away from Desert Hot Springs High School, attend a sex offender treatment program and refrain from contacting the victim.

Sledge previously pleaded guilty in November 2008 to a misdemeanor charge of having unlawful intercourse with a minor.

In the more recent case, Sledge had sex with an underage girl about 10 p.m. Feb. 5 in the 13600 block of Mesquite Avenue, according to Desert Hot Springs police Sgt. Ken Peary.

Earlier in the criminal proceedings, a judge disallowed a defense attorney’s request to have be admitted to mental health court — a rehabilitation program similar to drug court.

Yeah, I’m sure this will end well.

The Jessica’s and Megan’s laws are so effective and useful. Kept this guy from re-offending. Looks like the laws are doing just what they were intended to do – give the public a false sense of security. Repeal the laws and come up with some common sense sentencing. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out.

Exactly! They particularly give a false sense of security because 90% of molestations are by a family member or family friend. And never mind that fresh – and unregistered – offenders are coming along every day.

Despite all the rhetoric and new laws passed, judges are still using their discretion to free guys like this with a stern warning not to re-offend, while others who have committed much lesser offenses get sent to prison for outrageous terms. All the while, the rate of these sex crimes has not decreased one bit.

Ive met this man. Hes sick in the head and needs to be locked up where he can not prey on young naive little girls by staking out at the local high school and middle school!!!! He’ll do it again im sure so lets just hope the law decides to actually keep men like him away from our children.
