Vernon Mulls Reform Proposals As Assembly Looks To Dissolve Cityhood

VERNON (AP) — The Vernon City Council is set to consider several proposals that include salary cuts for city officials, the creation of a commission to oversee city-owned housing and term limits for council members.

The council is scheduled to discuss the plan Thursday.

Under the plan, the Los Angeles Times reports council members' annual salaries would be cut from about $70,000 to $25,000. Salary caps also would be imposed on other top city positions.

The plan comes a month after the state Assembly voted in favor of a bill that would dissolve Vernon by revoking incorporation from cities with fewer than 150 residents. Vernon's population is less than 100.

The bill's proponents say the city's small size has allowed rampant corruption.

The state Senate is expected to address the bill next month.
