LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Walt Disney Co. has withdrawn its application to trademark the phrase “SEAL Team 6.”

The entertainment company stepped back after the Navy moved to protect the naming rights for the unit of elite operatives that killed terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Disney sought the trademark rights on May 3, two days after operatives raided a luxury compound in Pakistan and killed the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.

It said it was looking to develop a TV show for its ABC subsidiary along the lines of like “NCIS” and “JAG,” which are also real-life Navy units.

Disney/ABC spokesman Kevin Brockman says the company pulled the plug on its bid in deference to the Navy’s application.

Navy spokeswoman Amanda Greenberg said the Navy is “fully committed” to protecting its trademark rights.

Good move Disney. See, that’s the difference between Disney and the hook-nosed misers at Dreamworks: Disney respectfully opted out of it. Dreamworks would have sued the Navy to the bitter end.

how was disney ever even involved or linked to the Seal Team 6 to make them think they could trademark it. what nerve and how unclassy. i used to look at disney as something wonderful and magical. now all i see is money hungry business people without any imagination. walt would be so ashamed of what his vision has become.

Wise decision over a VERY tacky move. I have no love for Disney for alot of reason, this being another in a long list of faux pas, they have no respect for the people of this country. Or the people that work for them.

Disney was caught, why would they think they had the naming rights to a military unit that in theory is owned by all of us. Unmitigated greed!
