Taxpayers To Pay $5M For Drunken Deputy Crash
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Taxpayers are paying nearly $5 million for a crash involving a drunken Los Angeles deputy whose sheriff's SUV slammed into a car with a driver high on methamphetamine.
Investigators say Deputy Robert Moran drank a couple of beers, dressed into his uniform and got behind the wheel of the Los Angeles County sport utility vehicle three years ago. A short time later, the speeding SUV hit a car, seriously injuring Elias Aldana.
The then-33-year-old driver of the car was high on meth and other drugs.
The Los Angeles Times says the Board of Supervisors approved the $4.75 million settlement last week.
Moran pleaded no contest to misdemeanor drunken driving and was sentenced to six months in jail, most of it served in home confinement. He's still a patrol deputy.
